Autana - Salto Angel Venezuela

The Abyss is located quite close to the boarder with Brazil. It is the abrupt ending of a Plateau, where El Paují lies, a nice community of people that escaped civilization living together with indigenous people.

The take off is oriented south looking into Brazil and the Amazon forests. This spot allows soaring and thermal flights. The view is excellent and you feel as if you are in another world.

There are three landing possibilities here. Either toplanding or if you sink and didn't find any updraft, land below at a little savanna before the jungle starts. If you catch thermals you can land on the back (heading north) at the Fundo el Vergel, the bee-keeping farm you pass when you walk to the Abyss. In this case you have to consider the rotor if the wind is strong, and go further back to escape it.

To get to El Paují you must take the road that goes from Santa Elena de Uairén to Ikabarú. It's a nice road, partially paved. The rest is a dirt road that can get very difficult during rainy season.

Once in El Paují you take the road passing the airstrip towards Fundo el Vergel, owned by the Scull Family. You leave the car close to their house and start a 45 minute walk to the Abyss.
