Autana - Salto Angel Venezuela

Picacho de Galipán is located in the Avila National Park. The Take Off lies on the northern part of the chain and you get a wonderful view of the Caribbean ocean.

To get to Picacho it's recommended to take along a four wheel drive vehicle, and a driver that will take down the car to pick up the pilots at the beach. It is possible to get there on the road that goes over the Avila from Caracas, passing the village of Galipán down to Macuto. So it's possible to ride either from Caracas or La Guaira (Coast). From Boca de Tigre it's a nice 45 minute walk till the take off.

The flights are generally made either very early at sunrise or at sunset, or at night during full moon. The winds are normally too strong during the day for paragliders. For hanggliders you have a wider take off window.

The launch is surrounded by fern, so you'd better not abort, or you'll have a nice time untangling the lines from these prehistoric plants.

Once you are in the air you'll get to see the wall right underneath your feet. During the flight you can enjoy the Avila, the Village of Galipan, Humboldt Hotel and the old cable car.

To the north you can see the Caribbean ocean, and the coastal settlements.

If there is enough wind, you can stay soaring on the ridge for a while, but take care that the winds could rise while the time passes. Also during flight you should check out your gliding speed, because it's normal to find different wind speed layers (called the picacho sandwich by locals).

There are three landings you can choose (from west to east), such as Pabero, you can recognize two big buildings forming a more or less flat V-shape. West to them you can land on big fields. This landing is the best if you find strong wind against you and your glide is not good.

Then you have the beach of Camuri Chico (on one of the pictures). It is possible to land between the two round buildings and north of them, close to the beach. This is the classic landing for this flight.

Finally, if you have a little or no wind, you can easily reach the Golf course of Caraballeda.

For this flight I advise to bring a bathing suit for taking a bath at Camuri Chico and for those who are not used to attach the accelerator, please do it, you might need it.
